The community members said we want Classic WoW
Producer director WoTLK Classic Gold Patrick Dawson and WoW Classic lead engineer Brian Birmingham explained the motivations behind this ambitious retrofitting the popular MMORPG and what they'd like to see it bring to gamers.
"The community members said we want Classic WoW. Then, when we looked at the game, it was a world that was crashing as well as teleport hacks. It didn't live up to the high quality level that Blizzard is today," Dawson told P2Pah. "Well, what if we employed our modern infrastructure? Could we retrofit it? We set off on an eight-week journey to see what this world was."
The determination to recreate the original experience within the new infrastructure resulted in a few decision factors. For certain players, the rough edges are part and parcel of the original character. Blizzard was left to make determinations on which elements were appropriate and which weren't, and the question came down to tough judgment calls.
"Anything that could impact gameplay we want to make sure that what we provide truly authentic." Birmingham declared. "Where we feel like quality-of-life buy WoTLK Classic Gold improvement is acceptable are things like, tapping to finish a name the game's in-game email. It's not an integral aspect of the game experience of leveling up and seeking out, and trying to explore the world.
